Just southeast of Ulefoss lies a patch of ground that has quietly become one of the most significant stories in European resource geology. Fensfeltet — the same ancient volcanic field that forms the geological heart of Gea Norvegica Geopark — is now being assessed as a potential rare-earth deposit of continental importance.

Why Fensfeltet matters

Rare-earth elements are the unglamorous but essential ingredients in modern technology: the magnets in wind turbines and electric-vehicle motors, and countless electronics, all depend on them. Europe currently imports almost all of its supply, largely from outside the continent, which makes any large domestic source strategically important.

The Norwegian government now describes Fensfeltet as Europe’s largest documented deposit of rare-earth elements. Development is still at an early planning stage: a state zoning process and multiple permits are required before any extraction could begin. The deep history under the headlines

The reason those minerals are here at all goes back around 580 million years, to an unusual carbonatite volcano that was active on this spot. This is the same geology that makes Fensfeltet a world reference point for volcanologists — and the same rock that fed iron mining here from the 1650s and niobium extraction after the Second World War. The rare-earth story is the latest chapter in a very long relationship between this ground and the people who have worked it.
