Heddal Stave Church is Norway’s largest stave church: a monumental wooden cathedral from the 13th century and one of Telemark’s most memorable cultural attractions.
Eight centuries of history
The church is about 29 metres high and is built from durable pine, with three distinctive towers, an external gallery and richly carved portals. Inside, visitors encounter traces of roughly 800 years of worship, medieval furnishings and motifs connected with Norse belief and legend. The building remains in use as a parish church.
What to see during your visit
Guided introductions are normally included during the visitor season. Opposite the church, Kafé Olea and the barn provide ticket sales, refreshments, a shop, toilets and exhibitions. Heddal Open-Air Museum is within walking distance and can turn the visit into a fuller cultural day.

Accessibility, tours and visitor facilities
Parking is signposted from the E134. Accessible parking and toilets are available by the barn, and the barn’s café and exhibitions are adapted for wheelchair users. The stave church itself is not wheelchair accessible, so visitors with mobility requirements should review the latest information or contact the attraction before travelling.
A guided introduction in Norwegian or English is normally included with admission during the main visitor season, with regular tours subject to services, weddings and other church use. The barn also contains ticket sales, refreshments, a shop and exhibitions. Complete a cultural itinerary with the Lifjell guide or visit Ulefos Hovedgaard on another day.
