Dalen–Skien along the Telemark Canal – accommodation for cyclists near Vrangfoss

The journey between Dalen and Skien brings together some of Telemark’s finest experiences: quiet country roads, lakes, mountain scenery, historic locks and a boat trip on the more than 100-kilometre Telemark Canal. Plan the trip as a combination of cycling and canal boat. The continuous signposted Canal Route runs between Dalen and Ulefoss. Between Ulefoss and Skien, the Telemark Canal recommends travelling by boat because there is no suitable continuous cycle route on this section.

The Canal Route from Dalen to Ulefoss

The Canal Route is approximately 115 kilometres long. The landscape changes from the mountains and lakes of West Telemark to the cultural landscape around Lunde and Ulefoss. Visit Telemark rates it as demanding and recommends allowing two to three days. The surface includes both asphalt and gravel, so a hybrid, gravel or electric bicycle is suitable for many riders.

You can cycle in either direction. From Dalen, travel east towards Ulefoss and Skien. From Skien, take the canal boat to Ulefoss and continue west by bicycle. Always check current timetables and prices before booking accommodation and transport, as boats run seasonally and bicycle capacity may be limited.

A suggested itinerary

Day 1: Dalen towards Vrådal

Start at the western end of the Telemark Canal in Dalen and ride through the distinctive West Telemark landscape. Allow time for rest stops and views.

Day 2: Vrådal via Lunde to Vrangfoss

Continue east towards Lunde and the canal locks. Telemark Guesthouse lies close to Vrangfoss and is a practical stop before the final cycling stage to Ulefoss. In the opposite direction, take the boat from Skien to Ulefoss before cycling via Vrangfoss and Lunde towards Dalen.
